A trip to the heart of the Puna of Catamarca and Salta

For the more adventurous who want to venture into the off-road circuits.
A week full of experiences with small communities of the puna and the most dazzling and less known landscapes of these two provinces of northern Argentina.
It includes Antofagasta de la Sierra, Salar de Antofalla, Salar de Arizaro, Cono de Arita, Tolar Grande, Salar del Diablo, Salar de Pocitos, Salar del Hombre Muerto and the Campo de Piedra Pómez.

Day 1 (Saturday):
Bus SFVC – Belén 12:30 hs. Arrival at Belén, Cuna Nacional del Poncho, at 17:00 hs aprox.
Night in Belén.

Day 2 (Sunday):
We leave Belén by 4×4, we drive along the mythical National Route 40, Médanos de Randolfo, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Laguna Blanca with imposing views of the snow-capped mountain of the same name with a height of 6,030 meters above sea level, watching vicuñas in their natural habitat. We continue towards El Peñón passing by the Portezuelo de Pasto Ventura at 4,000 meters above sea level and we arrive at Antofagasta de la Sierra, where we will be able to observe other volcanoes such as Alumbrera and Carlucci. We visit the town and go to rest to acclimatize to the altitude.
Dinner in a family house.
Night in Antofagasta.

Day 3 (Monday):
After breakfast we leave for Las Quinoas, a place with only 3 inhabitants. We will cross the Antofalla Salt Flat, the longest on the planet with 178 km, to reach the Kolla Atacameña Aboriginal Community of Antofalla, from where we will have an imposing view of the homonymous volcano of 6,409 meters above sea level.
Dinner and night in Antofalla in a family house.
(150 kms. of footprints in 6 hours).

Day 4 (Tuesday):
Continuing in the Puna we will take dusty roads to reach the Salar de Arizaro in the province of Salta. We will also see the magnificent Cono de Arita, and after crossing the salt flat we will arrive at Tolar Grande, an indigenous population of the Salta Puna with 150 inhabitants, whose railway station is the last one that has activity before crossing to Chile, near Llullaillaco. Dinner and overnight at Tolar Grande family home.
(160 kms of footprints in 6 hours).

Day 5 (Wednesday):
After breakfast we will see the curious formation called Ojos de Mar, passing by the beautiful Salar del Diablo, also known as Desierto del Laberinto (Labyrinth Desert). We will also transit the Salar de Pocitos to enter Catamarca again, visit the Salar del Hombre Muerto with the Potasio Lagoon and the ancient Incahuasi Mines. We will finish the day in Antofagasta.
Dinner and night in Antofagasta.
(330 kms of rubble in 9 hs).

Day 6 (Thursday):
After breakfast we will load our bags and say goodbye to Antofagasta de la Sierra. But there is still a great attraction to discover: the Campo de Piedra Pómez, a unique formation on the planet.
In the afternoon we will arrive at Belén with hundreds of images and experiences.
Farewell night in Belén.
(320 kms – 50 of footprints, 40 of rubble and 230 of pavement).

Day 7 (Friday):
Breakfast and free morning to visit textile craftsmen and visit London and the Inca Ruins of El Shinkal (consult guided visit). At 13:00 hs the bus to SFVC leaves.  Gral Urquiza’s sleeping car from 18:10 hs to BsAs. or overnight in Catamarca for the next day’s flight.

Maximum capacity: 4 passengers per van.

Total distance 1,230 km: 360 tracks, 410 gravel and 460 pavement.
